Diagnosis and Therapy of Skin Neoplasms
Diagnosis and Therapy of Skin Neoplasms
Skin cancer is the most common neoplasm worldwide, with squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinomas being the most frequent. Moreover, cutaneous melanoma is one of the most aggressive neoplasms in human pathology, and its incidence has been increasing in the last decades. Consequently, a correct and early diagnosis is essential for the best clinical management of the patient and for the best prognosis. However, the diagnosis of skin cancer offers particular difficulties, and consequently requires an integrative approach including both dermatologist and pathologist. Moreover, different therapeutic strategies may be currently offered to the skin cancer patients, depending on the stage of the neoplasm and the expression of specific therapeutic targets by neoplastic cells.
The multidisciplinary approach has recently acquired an important role in several branches of medicine including dermatology and dermatopathology, as the discussion between different medical specialists may lead to the best management of the patients, for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Indeed, tumor board meetings provide the opportunity to evaluate the diagnosis and the treatment possibilities, favoring adherence to the clinical guidelines, and improving communication among medical specialists. In this view, multidisciplinary management represents an essential guarantee for both the correct diagnosis and optimal treatment. Although every single specialist tends to have specific skills within their own specialty, multidisciplinary management represents an essential guarantee for both the correct diagnosis and optimal treatment of patients with cutaneous neoplasms.
