According to the United States Department of Agriculture, food insecurity is defined as a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food. In other words, food insecure households are not able to consistently provide enough food for all members due to a lack of resources. Research suggests that food insecurity is a growing problem in the United States. Unfortunately, food insecurity is often hidden from view, which can make it difficult to determine the prevalence of the problem. However, there are some estimates of the prevalence of food insecurity in the United States. One study estimates that 11.8% of households in the United States were food insecure at some point during 2018. This means that around 15.2 million households struggled to put food on the table at some point during the year. Given the hidden nature of food insecurity, this problem is likely underestimated.
